Mike has worked virtually all his life in the public sector, with 12 years as Chief Executive of Nexus, the Passenger Transport Executive in Tyne and Wear.
Prior to moving to the North East he worked for 18 years with London Transport. Upon retirement in 2006, uttering a battle cry of ‘why should young people have all the fun?’ he cast caution to the wind, sent his suits to Oxfam and set up a volunteering organisation for the over 50’s, ‘Gaps for Grumpies’.
In the past he has been a London borough councillor and Planning Committee Chair, comprehensive school Chair of Governors, a magistrate and a Samaritan. He currently is on the governing body of Ruskin College, Oxford, and is a non executive director of the Northumbria Healthcare Trust.
In 2013, Mike received an OBE for services to public transport and voluntary services in the North East.
