Time stands still for no man, or indeed woman and certainly not within the development of our brand new buildings at Great North Road! When I joined Changing Lives in July of last year Great North Road was in essence a combination of a building site and worn out accommodation which immediately transported me back to childhood trips to Butlins chalets! Having had a site tour on my first day the enormity of the project and huge opportunity that this would bring for all residents really excited me.
Time flew at the speed of light and as if in a time capsule myself and colleague Amy Robinson were somehow transported to furniture shops in October gathering ideas for fixtures and fittings. Christmas passed us by and in the dawn of 2014 we accepted handover of bright shiny new buildings affectionately known as tiers two and three. Tier two offering residents shared semi independent accommodation whilst tier three are two bedroomed independent living bungalows.
With the support of the staff team residents quickly moved into and settled in their new accommodation, within weeks the guys in tier two were planning and preparing meals together and taking real pride in their new home. The new buildings brought a real buzz to the place and staff commented upon the value such a positive environment brought to residents.
No sooner was the ink dry on the handover paperwork of tiers two and three the development of tier one, direct access accommodation with intense support began. Foundations were down and well I guess as they say the rest is history we now have tier one completed awaiting handover!
With the support of HCA this has literally been the transformation of old worn inappropriate accommodation to purpose built fit for purpose supported housing to really be proud of. Amy and her team have worked tirelessly to develop a seamless structured support programme which will provide intense one to one support in tier one, group and one to one independent living and life skills support within tier two and employment and move on activities in tier three.
All individuals will receive a full package of support from day one which will be tailored to meet individual need and circumstances. All within a physical environment that without any words of support or encouragement speaks volumes in re-iterating that we value everyone as an individual and we all deserve a safe environment to live in.
