Lewis* experienced homelessness at the age of 14.

By 21 he had eighteen failed accommodation placements, including foster care, temporary accommodation and homeless projects.

When he came to Changing Lives in York, Lewis had lots of labels attached to him – care leaver, excluded, homeless, heroin user, a failure in services – and these were holding him back.

He explained that all he wanted was his own home, somewhere to feel safe and build a better life. He found it hard to cope in shared accommodation due to his difficult experiences growing up.

Lewis has been supported by the Making Every Adult Matter project, delivered by Arc Light, part of the Changing Lives group.

After working with us, Lewis has put his homelessness behind him.

He has secured a tenancy with York City Council, through the York Housing First project. He is thriving in his new home and describes himself as ‘a good neighbour’.

In his heart-warming drawing, you can see the positives he feels from working with Changing Lives:

  • drug-free and making a fresh start
  • feeling secure
  • controlling his anger
  • feeling proud of his achievements

We couldn’t be happier for you Lewis. Thanks for letting us share your story.
