David Mishner, or Davy as he is known to friends, was supported through our 12-step recovery programme in North Tyneside and is now in paid employment with Changing Lives, helping other people who are facing drug or alcohol addiction.

Davy entered a short film into this year’s Recovery Street Film Festival, sharing his experiences and how he’s ‘making up for lost time’ now he is in recovery.

Davy attends the Recovery Centre in Wallsend, which is part of the North Tyneside Recovery Partnership (NTRP). NTRP also offer a 12-week abstinence-based recovery programme in North Shields, which Davy graduated from over a year ago.

Recovery Street Film Festival

Davy travelled to London earlier this month for the Recovery Street Film Festival launch and awards night, where his film was awarded third place.

After being shortlisted in the top 10 films in this year’s festival, Davy travelled down to London with Colin Bainbridge, Peer Mentor Team Leader at NTRP, for the launch night and awards ceremony. Davy was awarded third place, winning Amazon vouchers in recognition of his achievement.

Davy said:

“I found the experience absolutely amazing. It’s the first time I’ve been to London sober. If anyone gets anything from my film or the other films that were shortlisted, it’s a job well done.”

The aim of the Recovery Street Film Festival is to empower people affected by addiction by giving them a voice, providing a platform for them to tell their own stories of the ‘ups and downs’ and how they reached recovery.

The theme for the fourth annual competition was ‘making up for lost time’, encouraging people to give an honest and personal account in an innovative way. The films entered into the festival show a different side to the story of addiction: one that shows a true picture of the determination, commitment and courage that is required to start life afresh.

Changing Lives is part of the North Tyneside Recovery Partnership (NTRP), a dedicated service for anyone in North Tyneside experiencing problems with drugs and alcohol. The NTRP Recovery Centre is supports people to work towards their individual recovery, providing support groups and other structured activities.

NTRP is led by Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTWNHS), and supported by Changing Lives and Turning Point.

NTRP will be showcasing Davy’s film, and the other shortlisted films from this year’s Recovery Street Film Festival, at their Recovery Month celebration on Friday 29th September.

The film was made by Changing Lives volunteers – thanks to them, and to Davy for sharing his story.
