Over £4,000 raised to tackle food waste and poverty at Sodexo Stop Hunger Dinner in Newcastle - My CMS

Generous Geordies have raised over £4,000 to stop hunger at a charity dinner held at St. James’ Park in Newcastle.

The Sodexo ‘Stop Hunger’ charity dinner was held on Wednesday 27th June 2018 at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, in partnership with FareShare North East.

126 guests were treated to a four-course dining experience overlooking the pitch at Newcastle United’s stadium, as well as a canapé reception, and coffee and petit fours to round off the night.

The money raised from the charity dinner will be split evenly between FareShare North East and Sodexo’s Stop Hunger Foundation.

FareShare North East is the local franchise of national charity FareShare UK, and is delivered and managed by Changing Lives. FareShare UK is a national initiative to save in-date surplus food from landfill by redistributing it to community groups in need in the local area.

Stuart Bowman, Development Chef in the Food Platform of Sodexo, was inspired to organise the event following a day volunteering with FareShare North East. He said:

“I found the work that the FareShare North East volunteers did was truly amazing. Going out in the vans to distribute the food was a real eye opener as I got to see so many places that FareShare support within our region.

“I approached NUFC to see if they would be interested in helping us out in terms of hosting the event, the hardest part I have been told is to secure a venue, so when Newcastle United offered the Magpie Club room the ball was well and truly rolling.

“From there we have approached numerous suppliers to donate surplus stock to allow us to create our event alongside the food sourced from the FareShare depot.

“We were looking to raise as much as possible to support the FareShare North East team as they move to a new larger premises to satisfy the upturn in demand.”

As well as being treated to a delicious 4-course meal and panoramic views of the pitch, guests at the dinner were encouraged to dig deep for a prize raffle and auction, all in the aid of tackling food poverty and changing lives in the local area.

Prizes at the auction included a mini-cruise to Amsterdam for four people and a chocolate masterclass with Callebaut.

With the help of volunteers, FareShare North East distributes food to over 120 charities and community groups across the region, providing over 10,000 nutritious meals a week for people in need.

FareShare North East diverts almost 300 tonnes of food from landfill and to people facing food poverty in the local area each year. The food distributed is good quality and in-date, but deemed as surplus from suppliers and retailers.
