Team members, staff and supporters of South Shields FC raised hundreds at a fundraising sleepout for Changing Lives.

Participants stayed overnight at the club’s grounds, Mariners Park, on Saturday, February 9. South Shields FC captain Jon Shaw was among those who took part in the event to raise awareness of homelessness, and it wasn’t his first experience of a charity sleepout.

“I did it for one night at the last sleepout and it’s so hard to do, and that’s only for one night. There are people who go through it every night. People are often homeless for reasons we don’t expect and there are a lot more going through this than we know.”

Changing Lives Team Leader Kevin Waggott, who took part in the sleepout and also volunteers at the club, said

“The night was a great success! From the bucket collection at the match I counted a few hundred pounds.”

Once the money pledged by sponsors arrives the proceeds will be split between Changing Lives and two other local organisations: Hospitality and Hope and North East Athletic.
